1. Estimates Only, Not a Guarantee
How Long Can We Boondock? produces estimates derived from averaged assumptions about showers, dishwashing, toilet use, and drinking water. Habits, climate, and equipment vary widely from rig to rig and trip to trip — hot weather, extra guests, a leaky fixture, or a longer shower can consume water far faster than the model predicts. RV tank level senders are also notoriously inaccurate, so the gauge on your panel may not reflect what is actually in the tank. Treat every number on this Service as a planning starting point, not a promise, and calibrate against your own real-world usage.
2. Always Carry Emergency Drinking Water
Never plan a trip so that your fresh water runs out exactly when the calculator says it will. Always carry emergency drinking water beyond the calculation — separate, sealed containers you do not touch unless you need them. A breakdown, a washed-out road, or a longer-than-planned stay can turn a tight water budget into a genuine emergency in a remote area with no refill options.
3. Dehydration Risk in Heat
Water needs rise sharply in hot weather and at altitude, and dehydration can set in faster than people expect — especially for children, older adults, and pets. The Service's drinking-and-cooking default is a moderate-conditions figure; in desert or summer conditions your crew may need substantially more. When in doubt, carry more water and drink it. Do not ration drinking water to protect a trip plan.
4. Dispose of Grey and Black Water Legally
Grey and black water must be disposed of only at designated dump stations. Dumping holding tanks on the ground, into vault toilets, or into storm drains harms ecosystems, contaminates water sources, and carries fines in most jurisdictions — on much public land it is a citable offense even for grey water. Nothing in this Service — including any estimate of how full a tank will be — is a suggestion to dump anywhere other than a proper facility. Know the rules for the land you are camping on before you go.
5. Potable Water Safety
The calculator assumes the water in your fresh tank is safe to drink. Keeping it that way is up to you: sanitize your fresh tank and lines on the schedule your RV manufacturer recommends, fill only from known potable sources, and use hoses rated for drinking water (typically white or blue "drinking-water safe" hoses) — never a garden hose. Water that sits in a tank through heat or long storage can become unsafe even if it went in clean.
6. No Professional or Medical Advice
Nothing in this Service constitutes professional, safety, or medical advice. Hydration needs vary by person and condition; if you have questions about how much water you or your crew need — particularly in extreme heat, at altitude, or with a medical condition — consult a qualified professional. For questions about your rig's tanks, plumbing, or sanitation system, consult your RV's manufacturer or a qualified RV technician.
