Read this before you plug in. Electricity can cause electric shock, electrocution, arc flash, and fire, and overloaded circuits can ignite wiring. This tool estimates typical appliance loads — it is not an electrical inspection, and it is never a reason to bypass or "upsize" a breaker. If a breaker trips, it is doing its job: reduce the load, don't defeat the protection.

1. Estimates Only, Not an Electrical Inspection

Will It Trip the Breaker? adds up typical wattage presets for common RV appliances and compares them to the nominal capacity of the power source you select. Actual nameplate ratings vary by manufacturer, model, and year; starting (inrush) currents vary with temperature and supply voltage; and wiring, connections, and pedestal condition all affect what your circuit can really deliver. Check the data plate or label on your own appliances and edit the numbers in the tool to match — the presets are starting points, not measurements. No output of this Service is a substitute for an inspection of your rig's electrical system by a qualified person.

2. Electrical Hazards

Electrical systems can cause serious injury, death, and fire. RV shore power, generators, inverters, and 120V/240V circuits present risks of electric shock, electrocution, arc flash, short-circuit, overheating, and fire. Never bypass, defeat, or up-rate a circuit breaker, fuse, or overcurrent device — they protect the wiring from igniting. All electrical work should be performed by a qualified person in accordance with equipment manufacturers' instructions and all applicable codes and standards, including as applicable the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), NFPA 1192, and ABYC guidance, using properly rated wire, connectors, and overcurrent protection. Low campground voltage, miswired pedestals, and overloaded circuits can damage equipment and start fires; use appropriate surge/EMS protection and never exceed a circuit's rated capacity. You assume all risk of operating or modifying any electrical equipment.

3. Breakers and Fuses Protect Wiring — Never Bypass Them

Circuit breakers and fuses exist to protect the wiring behind them from overheating and catching fire. Never bypass, tape, hold closed, or replace a breaker or fuse with a higher rating to stop nuisance trips. A breaker that trips repeatedly is telling you the load is too large for the circuit — the fix is to shed load, stagger appliances, or have a qualified electrician evaluate the circuit, never to defeat the protection device.

4. Low Campground Voltage (Brownouts)

Campground pedestals under heavy park-wide load can sag well below 120V. Low voltage raises the current your appliances draw and is especially hard on air conditioner compressors, which can overheat or fail when run on a brownout. Consider using an EMS (electrical management system) or surge protector with low-voltage cutoff, and avoid running high-draw appliances when pedestal voltage is sagging.

5. Generator Ratings and Altitude Derating

The Service's altitude derating (roughly 3% of output per 1,000 ft above about 500 ft) is a rule of thumb. Actual derating, rated watts, peak watts, and surge duration tolerance are manufacturer-specific — consult your generator's manual, and use any manufacturer-supplied high-altitude kit or jetting where required. Do not rely on this Service to determine that a generator can safely start or carry a given load.

6. Soft-Start Devices

Soft-start figures in this Service are typical results, not guarantees. Soft-start devices must be selected for your specific air conditioner and installed per the device manufacturer's instructions — improper installation can damage the compressor, the device, or your rig's wiring. If you are not comfortable working inside an air conditioner's electrical compartment, have the device installed by a qualified technician.

7. Qualified Persons and Applicable Codes

All electrical work — on your RV, your generator hookup, or any household circuit you plug into — should be performed by qualified persons in accordance with applicable electrical codes and standards (in the United States, the National Electrical Code and applicable RV standards) and local regulations. Never work on energized circuits.

Determining whether any configuration is appropriate for your particular purpose is solely your responsibility, to be made in consultation with equipment manufacturers and qualified professionals. Any reliance you place on the Service is strictly at your own risk.
