Read this before you commit to a steep transition. 1. Estimates Only, Not a Site Survey

Will My Rig Scrape? compares a departure angle you enter or derive against a transition grade you select or enter. It has no knowledge of your actual vehicle, trailer, suspension, loading, or the real transition you are about to cross. Real-world transitions are rarely clean two-plane geometry — they can be rounded, uneven, cambered, or rutted, all of which change the effective angle at the exact instant your overhang passes over. A wrong or optimistic input produces a wrong or optimistic verdict. Measure your own rig, and get out and look (GOAL) at any unfamiliar transition before committing.

2. Loaded Suspension Sag Is Not Accounted For

The ground clearance and departure angle you enter should reflect your rig as it normally sits and travels — but even then, tongue weight, passenger and cargo load, and soft or worn suspension can cause additional sag exactly when it matters most (a nose-heavy trailer under load, a truck squatting under tongue weight). Assume your real clearance at the moment of crossing is equal to or less than the number you measured, never more.

3. Grade Presets Are Rough Approximations

The "gentle," "moderate," "steep," and "very steep" preset categories are rules of thumb for typical residential and campground transitions, not measurements of the specific spot you are about to cross. Grades vary meaningfully within each category. If precision matters, measure the actual grade with a digital angle finder or smartphone clinometer app rather than relying on a preset.

4. Crossing Technique Changes the Real Outcome

Crossing a crest square-on (both sides of an axle or the full width at once) is more likely to scrape than crossing at a diagonal, one wheel at a time, which increases the effective angle any single point sees at a given instant. This tool does not model crossing technique — it assumes a straight-on crossing as the conservative baseline. Slow, diagonal crossings with a spotter are safer than what this tool's numbers alone describe.

5. No Professional Advice

Nothing in this Service constitutes engineering, mechanical, or safety advice. If you have any doubt about your vehicle's or trailer's clearance, ground geometry, or the safety of a particular crossing, get out and look, use a spotter, or consult a qualified mechanic or fabricator about your rig's actual specifications.
